World Book Day

We had a wonderful World Book Day on Thursday 1st March. We dressed up as our favourite book characters - I wonder if you can guess who we are?

We also had a storyteller visit us. Her name was Cathy and we had great fun listening to her.

Bottle-top Butterflies

As we have finished our igloo, we wanted another project to sink our teeth into! As it is nearly spring we decided to complete some work on butterflies. This fitted nicely into our maths study of symmetry. We also wanted to highlight the importance of re-cycling. We collected bottle-tops and planned our symmetrical butterfly designs. We worked in 3 groups and will continue this project until we have our beautiful bottle-top butterflies on display (hopefully in time for Spring!). Keep following the blog for more updates.

World Book Day

Our class cannot wait to dress up as our favourite book characters for World Book Day on Thursday 1st March. We will be having a parade for all the parents and a storyteller is visiting the school. The P6/7 class are also going to talk to authors on-line.
To get ready for this event, we have been in the school library looking at the books on sale. We had a lovely time reading and choosing our books.

A Busy Class

We have been so busy in P.3/4 during the month of February! We celebrated Valentine's Day and our 100th day of school on Tuesday 14th February.

On Tuesday 21st February we had yummy pancakes to celebrate Pancake Day. We learnt that it is also called Shrove Tuesday and it is celebrated just before Lent.

It was Ebony's 7th birthday on Friday 24th February and she brought in a chocolate birthday cake to share!

Our most important news is that we have finally got our igloo finished!! Yeah!!

We love how the bottom of the milk cartons look like blocks of ice!

Look at how beautiful it is inside the igloo. This will provide a peaceful place to read and think.

Finally, Georgia brought in her snail eggs to show us and we are all very excited to see them hatch!

Phew! We are exhausted! We can't wait for March madness to begin as we have great Easter plans. Keep following us on our blog.

Bearded Dragon

On Friday morning we had a very special visitor. Billy-Joe's dad brought in his Bearded Dragon for us to look at. We were able to touch it and ask questions.

It was particularly special as this is the Year of the Dragon and we have been learning about the Chinese New Year (23rd January)

I have the most creative and artistic class ever! I set them the challenge of making a castle with scrap materials (boxes, toilet roll tubes, egg cartons etc) and was overwhelmed by the results! They are magnificent! I am so proud of them :)

Angry Birds

Have a look at the Angry Birds we made from clay. We used pipe-cleaners for their legs and tried to make them look really grumpy. After we painted them, we glazed them to make them shiny. Don't they look great?

Mrs Gee and her class from St Augustine's Junior School sent us beautifully stitched cupcakes. We were too late to hang them on our Christmas tree so we displayed them on our washing line. They look good enough to eat!! Thank you Mrs Gee!

Happy New Year everyone!

We were very excited to get back to school! We started our maths with a fun activity of sorting and graphing Skittles. We used a bag of Skittles, a sorting mat, a bar graph recording sheet, and a response activity sheet. Then we sorted our Skittles by colour onto our mat and recorded it on our bar graph. After we answered the questions about our graphs, we got to eat the Skittles!

Oh Christmas Tree

We started to make large stained glass baubles with balloons, pva glue and tissue paper. We will post a photograph when they are finished.

I had a go at making this bird from newspaper and wire - the children will try it over the next few weeks.

Snowman Snack

We made marshmallow rice krispie snowmen. This was to support our procedural writing in literacy and our measuring in numeracy.

First we washed our hands.

Then we very carefully melted butter in a saucepan.

Next we added the marshmallows and melted them - it was important to keep stirring.

They looked like this.

We added our rice krispies.

The children used black fondant icing to make a hat and eyes.

Now for the fun part - build your snowman!

This wee man was so fat his sweet scarf didn't fit!

Finally, eat and enjoy!

TOP TIP - we discovered that if you smear butter on your fingers, the mix won't stick to them.

Winter Wonderland

We created this very simple but stunning winter wonderland. We wanted a forest of Christmas trees - look closely at our decorations. Many thanks to Zack's mum who donated some craft materials to the class! She's a star!

We built a mini paper village. Glitter for the frost and fake snow in the gardens makes it look really chilly!

We made 3D Christmas trees - a forest in our classroom!

Dunk string into PVA glue and wrap it around a balloon to make a giant Christmas bauble. We covered ours with glitter and are hanging them from the ceiling.

On Friday we had a visit from Ancient Paths Training for a music workshop with puipls, teachers and parents. Jackie and Lawrence taught us the importance of cultural awareness through music. They played guitar and allowed us to play drums. We even tried to blow the shofar!

As the weather gets colder, we have been inspired to create some winter decorations. Another use for toilet roll tubes!

I have been trying to plan Christmas decorations that the children can make. I want something different and more exciting than paper-chains. I decided to try this garland made with circles of magazine pages and string (great recycling!). I love the result and can't wait to show the class how to make them.

At Black Mountain Primary School we have such supportive and enthusiastic parents! I set a home learning challenge this week for the children to complete with their family - 'Create a Monster'. They could use any bits and pieces they had around the house. I was overwhelmed at the response! See for yourself just how artistic and creative Black Mountain families are.

Harvest Celebration

We performed our drama and song for the school, parents and members of our community. We were amazed at how many parents came to join us. Our song was by Will.I.Am and Sesame Street, called "What I Am". The drama was about vegetables arguing about who was the best. It was called "We Are The Greatest".
We collected lots of food for the elderly members of our community and delivered hampers to them. It was a great morning!

We made these yummy monster eyes from Oreo biscuits, melted white chocolate, green fondant icing and a chocolate drop for the pupil of the eye.

We are going to have a spooky, spectacular party on Thursday afternoon!
